The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. This cardinal wasn't bashful about getting her share from the feeder. Much like we go through the drive thru, I imagined that she was relieved not to have to work at finding supper, she was going through the fly thru.
