Driving on the backroads in southwestern Missouri I came across this old rock structure sitting off from the road. I thought it was so intriguing. Who built it? Why? What was it used for? What purpose could it still serve? I can just imagine kids playing inside, pretending it was a fort or a fancy hotel! (You know kids have wild imaginations!) It made me mentally calculate the work involved. The iron ore dug from some mountain, and melted down to make the iron and put on a train to a distribution site was just part of the process. The lime dug from a quarry to make the concrete mixture and the craftsman who knew just how to mix it with sand to get the right consistency to permanently hold the rocks together. And oh, those rocks! Back breaking work to harvest them from the fields and get them to the building site and lift them one by one to position them in place with the mortar mixture. I wonder how many people have returned back home after years away and driven by and exclaimed "It's Still There!"
