Thank you Merridy. I wish you had been with me to enjoy this and all the other rocks I got to see.

WOW, this is an amazing arch. I appreciate that you took the time to tell us the story. Your description evokes emotions of what people have gone through and I also like the powerful angles in your composition. It seems as if we are hiding/camping out with them.

Artist's Description

This is a photograph I took while hiking on the Trail of Tears at The Nature Conservancy's Mantle Rock Preserve in Livingston County, Kentucky. Thousands of Cherokee camped for weeks here as they waited for ice conditions in the Ohio River to allow a safe crossing. Mantle Rock spans 167 feet with a width of 17 feet. I attempted to capture the beauty of this incredible preserve, but the photographs only tell part of my experience. My heart ached and I, too, shed tears for those who suffered here. I will never forget my experience in this sacred place.
