Description
Although this photograph was taken of a recent day replica of the old water pumps used before modern indoor plumbing, I digitally manipulated the image to give it a nostalgic affect. I remember how excited my family was when we were able to pump fresh water from the newly hand-dug cistern using a pump just like this one. The pump was installed in the kitchen making it a real luxury not to have to go outside during cold weather to get water. The water could be pumped at anytime and heated on the wood stove for cooking, cleaning and bathing. It was important to leave the handle down so it wouldn't lose water pressure. In the rare cases it did, one would have to 'prime' it by pouring water in the top as you 'pumped' the handle up and down.
